Minn. Bill Would Charge Manufacturers for Recall Operations
State Representative Tony Cornish, R-Good Thunder introduced a bill at the Minnesota Capitol that would require medical device manufacturers to cover costs related to replacement in case of product recall. Rob Clark, a spokesman for Medtronic, said in a statement that state and local initiatives such as this one were “unnecessary.” Cornish concurs — if there was a federal initiative strong enough to his liking to address this issue. He justified the bill by saying it was unfair that Medicare and private insurers had to pay for manufacturer mistakes, and that bearing full replacement costs would push vendors to be more careful on quality. More on this from Pioneer Press.
