Smaller Sutures from Angiotech Cleared

Angiotech Pharmaceuticals, Incorporated has expanded their line of sutures (pdf) with the FDA approval of smaller sized Quill sutures. A news release was issued by the company describing the expansion of the product line. The suture line is being displayed at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

These sutures are indicated for completion of deep tissue closure. The new sizes available from the company include 3-0 and 4-0 of the Quill Self-Retaining System (SRS) Polydioxanone (PDO) line. These sutures are absorbable and longer lasting than other sutures.

The smaller profile supports improved holding strength and do not require knots to maintain adequate tension across the wound. Elimination of knot tying can simplify completion of closure, as well as reducing overall operative time.

The sutures are placed bidirectionally within the wound. Surgeons commence suturing in the middle of the wound and then suture in two directions to close the wound.

An additional benefit of the smaller size is an expansion of the number of procedures that can be completed with the Quill SRS sutures. Another product from the Quill line was launched in August, as described on HospitalBuyer.
