Surgical Hemostasis Kit Market Ready

A combined product, the GelFoam Plus Hemostatis Kit, from Baxter Healthcare Corporation and Pfizer, Incorporated has procured the necessary approval from the Food and Drug Administration to commence product marketing. Baxter issued a press release describing approval of the collaborative effort.

The kit is intended for use during surgical procedures in which patients experience extensive bleeding that cannot be controlled with conventional approaches or those means are not suitable to the situation. Included in the kit is a surgical sponge from Pfizer along with a thrombin product from Baxter.

The Pfizer GelFoam sponge is specifically designed for use with human thrombin. Baxter’s human thrombin product is derived from human plasma. The GelFoam is indicated for use during surgical procedures as a component in agents to promote blood clotting.

The kit is being assembled, distributed, and promoted by Baxter. Pfizer is supplying Baxter with sterile GelFoam sponges for distribution.
