Technology Combats Hard to Heal Wounds

Decreased vascularization to the extremities presents a significant problem for diabetics. Foot ulcers, in particular, pose a real treatment challenge.

Kinetic Concepts, Inc. released findings from a recent clinical trial in a cohort of over 300 patients that examined healing with its V.A.C. therapy wound healing device. Positive findings were noted; more of the hard to heal, complex wounds resolved and in a shortened time frame.

Researchers also noted an improved ability of wounded areas treated with V.A.C. to engage in the normal physiologic activities required for healing, specifically granulation tissue development.

Study authors believe that the device also significantly reduced the number of patients who otherwise would have required amputation to prevent further spread of infection.
