Trumpf Gets Green Light from FDA for Its New ILED

TRUMPF Medical Systems announced FDA approval for sales of its iLED surgical light in the US market. Th product uses 184 white and color LEDs to provide 160,000 Lux of low heat, almost shadow-free illumination. According to its manufacturer, the lighting system’s unique feature is its ability to change color temperature. Non-glare light at about 3,500 Kelvin can be used for skin and light tissue parts with less reflection and good contrast. Colder light colors (up to 5,000 Kelvin), however, are said to be preferred for deeper lying body areas and longer surgeries. LEDs have long life-cycles, lasting about 20,000 hours, or an estimated 5 to 8 years. Trumpf is headquartered in Germany and this product was already sold in Europe since November 2005.
