Alternate Approach for Sinus Surgery

Sinus surgery for allergy sufferers may become less uncomfortable and available for a broader array of patients through a new approach: balloon dilation.

Similar to cardiovascular approaches for clogged arteries, ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) surgeons insert a small tube with a balloon at the tip along a guide wire. The balloon is expanded to reopen the clogged airway. This alternative means to sinus surgery is associated with a quicker recovery time and decreased inflammation and bleeding.

The bleeding with the standard surgical approach often requires nasal packing. This component of the procedure, secondary to resulting sinus pressure and pack removal, can be rather painful for patients. As well, patients with sleep apnea cannot tolerate packing. This approach may offer relief from sinus suffering from a broader array of patients.
