Award Recognizes Improved Care Patterns
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center received an award from Massachusetts’s Blue Cross for an approach implemented to reduce medical errors. The $100,000 award will be used to continue nursing training in patient safety.
In 2000, a newborn died in the facility. The hospital responded, noting miscommunications and errors in judgment that occurred along the way, with an overhaul in standard procedures for care delivery. This included an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association by the Department Chief.
Among changes implemented were teamwork training and conflict resolution based on military models, limiting workload for obstetricians, and modifications to patient monitoring procedures. Since implementation of changes, a 35 percent decrease in department adverse events was noted, writes the Boston Globe.
